Assuming were speaking about a two-track beat ( Mp3 or WAV) , Loud - compressed - Limiter bounced beats are cool to display online for sample and listening purposes, but might need to be fixed or adjusted by the engineer for recording vocals on it.
When an artist puts their vocals on a beat, the beat needs to have some breathing room so the vocals can sit in it. When a producer / composer adds loudness, limiting or compression on their beats, it makes all the elements in the beat loud, making it almost impossible for a vocal to sit in it. This is is called mastering the beat.
If you ever pay attention to your favorite famous artist beat, its always very low in the mid range, allowing the vocals to have their own space, then the Engineer masters the entire song, including the beat, making it sound clearer, and louder without loosing dynamic range.
So, when you get a beat online, its most likely already compressed, and the the Engineer will compress it again for the final mix. Sometimes the beat is so compressed, the engineer cant add anymore compression, but then the song will sound like the vocals and the beat not sitting together.
Long story short, if you can get the beat from the producer, ask them to leave some headroom, and do not add any limiting or compression on the master output, let the engineer do it when you record it. If you are getting a beat from the internet, just remember that the engineer might have to turn the beat down and eq it so your voice can sit in it, which sometimes can change the way you were used to hearing the beat. But we at Enviyon have solutions for this phenomenon if you cant work around it!!
